U.N. Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to create a better world by 2030,by ending poverty, fighting inequality, and addressing the urgency of climate change.

The Guam Green Growth initiative is guided by the goals. It is now up to all of us, governments, businesses, civil society, and the people of Guam to work together to build a better future for everyone

Healthy and Prosperous Communities

Goal 1

End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Goal 2

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

Goal 3

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Goal 9

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation,

Overview: Pacific Islanders have a rich history of relying on the land and ocean to sustain themselves. Currently, unsustainable development, overfishing, erosion, coral bleaching, climate change, and other threats to our environment put our island’s natural resources at risk.

Developing long-term plans to sustainably use and manage our marine resources and terrestrial ecosystems will ensure that we have a livable island for generations to come. Taking urgent action to address climate change will ensure we are resilient to stronger storms, droughts, and other impacts.

Main Actions: Increasing food security and accessibility to local, nutritious food (community gardens, sustainable agriculture, and aquaculture); Creating an environment for innovative cottage industries that can help us reduce reliance on imports and reduce waste generation

Educated Capable and Compassionate Island

Goal 4

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Goal 5

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Goal 8

Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

Goal 10

Reduce inequality within and among countries.

Goal 16

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Overview: Before members of our community can provide for themselves and contribute to our island, they must be equipped with the knowledge and tools to do so.

Education, workforce development, and encouraging equitable and respectful treatment of all members of our society will facilitate progress towards the goals of each person and our island.

Main Actions: Improving graduation rates; Developing supplemental curriculum and service-learning opportunities that focus on the locally relevant topics related to the SDGs; Improving accessibility to education and workforce development training

Sustainable Homes, Utilities, and Transportation

Goal 6

Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.

Goal 7

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Goal 11

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Goal 12

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Overview: Our homes protect us and our families, our utilities ensure we can be healthy, hygienic, and comfortable, and our transportation helps us access our needs outside of the home. Safe, resilient, and sustainable homes, electricity, water, and transportation should be accessible to the entire population. Efficient utility supply and transportation systems will reduce waste and save taxpayers and providers money in the long run.

Furthermore, we must strive to sustainably produce, consume, and dispose of a higher percentage of goods to minimize impacts to the environment. Improving our infrastructure yields benefits to our lives and our environment.

Main Actions: Improving and greening public transportation; Increasing renewable energy; Improving water quality standards and delivery; Reducing our island’s waste

Thriving Natural Resources

Goal 13

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Goal 14

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

Goal 15

Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Main Actions: Achieving the goals of the Micronesia Challenge Plus; Protecting and effectively managing our fisheries; Ramping up watershed restoration and forest conservation

Sustainable Alliances

Goal 17

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

Overview: Achieving these ambitious Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 would be impossible if done without alliances. Aligning our efforts with local, regional, international, and global partnerships can help us accelerate reaching our goals.

We can learn from the achievements of others and share our successes with those who are still joining the path. We will be doing our part to address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. Although we are one small island in the Pacific, we can have a big impact and we are stronger together.

Main Actions: Become more engaged in local, regional, international, and global partnerships and forums in order to enhance our efforts to have a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future
