UOG receives national award for sustainability leadership of Guam Green Growth

The University of Guam is one of 11 universities to win a 2021 Excellence and Innovation Award from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. The UOG Center for Island Sustainability received the Sustainability and Sustainable Development Award for facilitating climate and sustainability solutions in the community through the island-wide Guam Green Growth (G3) Initiative.

“To receive one of 11 awards among the association’s membership of 400 public colleges and universities is quite telling that we — as a university and as an island — are not only effectively leading our community in sustainability solutions, but we’re setting an example nationwide,” said UOG President Thomas W. Krise.

AASCU President and CEO Mildred García said the UOG Center for Island Sustainability was selected by the awards committee “for its outstanding results and potential to influence and serve as a model for other institutions.”

Guam Green Growth is an island-wide initiative to locally implement the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It is the most comprehensive public-private partnership ever created achieve a sustainable future for Guam.

The Center for Island Sustainability has facilitated the initiative, which brought together 99 individuals from all sectors of society appointed through Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero’s Executive Order 2019-23. The working group members developed an “Action Framework” that was formally adopted by the governor in September 2020 and now guides implementation of the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals in locally and culturally effective ways.

“Guam Green Growth is a remarkable partnership between all sectors of our society to create a sustainable future for our island,” the governor said. “Congratulations to the University of Guam for this distinct and well-deserved honor as the facilitators of this island-wide movement.”

Austin Shelton, director of the Center for Island Sustainability and co-chair of the G3 Steering Committee, said this is an award for the working group members from the community as well, who took a personal interest in the island’s future and dedicated their time and expertise to creating this plan.

“Thanks to all the dedicated G3 Working Group members and supporters,” Shelton said. “Guam is demonstrating that we are a global leader in island sustainability. Through G3, we are taking local action to ensure a sustainable global future.”

The university will be officially recognized among the other awardees during the 2021 AASCU Annual Meeting on Nov. 7 in Florida.

Local2030 Islands Network Secretariat Summary
New York
July 15, 2021

The Local 2030 Islands Network convened a virtual side event hosted by Ireland at the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) ‘Island Responses to COVID-19 – In the Context of Climate Resilience and Sustainable Development through the Local2030 Islands Network’, on July 12, 2021. Leaders, high-level officials, and stakeholders from numerous island economies, including Ireland, the United States, the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Grenada and Guam shared perspectives on their approaches to a green, resilient and equitable COVID-19 recovery to address climate change and achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Island leaders voiced their enthusiasm and support for the Local2030 Islands Network. Participants engaged in a collaborative discussion on locally relevant and culturally appropriate solutions to climate change that can be scaled for global impact. Participants exchanged experiences on challenges catastrophic weather events and the reliance on tourism, which was exacerbated by COVID-19, and the need to diversify the economy and invest in food security. They emphasized the critical actions that will be taken by the Local2030 Islands Network, which supports peer-to-peer learning to achieve ambitious, community-driven development goals, and welcomed the technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and capacity building that will be provided through the Network. Participants further agreed that island economies, with their distinct geographies and history of systems-thinking, cultural practices, and local wisdom are positioned to lead in innovative nature-based solutions to achieve a clean energy transition, climate resilience, and a circular economy.

Island leaders discussed initiatives that the Local2030 Islands Network will undertake, including peer-to-peer learning and communities of practice across the Network’s membership, exploring the commonalities of island communities that can support SDG implementation, and leveraging the inherent connection of islands to the ocean to strengthen the relationship between climate action and the protection of marine environments. Further points highlighted were the collaborative development of indicators for islands and monitoring instruments to support data-driven decision making, and financing for SDGs.

Participants agreed to take action on the SDGs through the Local2030 Islands Network based upon peer-to-peer learning and knowledge, tools, and skill sharing, along with technical assistance provided by the US federal agencies and other partners. Launched in 2019, the United States and Ireland pledged support for the Network to further outreach efforts and opportunities to scale climate and sustainable development initiatives.

CHOW 2021: “Improving Resource and Climate Policy Engagement in the U.S. Territories”

Home to more than 4 million people, the islands of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, American Samoa and Guam sit on the frontlines of a rapidly accelerating climate crisis. There, the islands and the communities that live on them face disproportionate climate impacts because of their size, low elevation, relatively remote geographical location, and concentration of coastal infrastructures. Yet, they remain on the periphery of U.S. ocean and climate policy. The panel will discuss the specific ocean and climate issues facing island communities including public health, ocean and climate impacts, management of natural resources and how these islands’ people are rising to meet the challenges in their own communities.

Speakers:
The Honorable Talauega Eleasalo Vaalele Ale, Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa
The Honorable Sheila Babauta, Chair, Natural Resources Committee, Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature
Kemit-Amon Lewis, Marine Scientist, Perry Institute for Marine Science
Lirio Márquez-D’Acunti, Executive Director, Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust
Austin J. Shelton, Ph.D., Executive Director, Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant, University of Guam
