Stronger than the storm. 💪🏽 Fresh off Super Typhoon Bavi, the Guam Green Growth Conservation Corps and Youth Corps hit the ground running at the UOG campus to assist with recovery efforts. From hauling fallen branches to caring for our local flora at the Center for Island Sustainability, these hardworking teams are paving the way to a swifter, greener recovery.
Three undergraduate students, Angelie Donguines, Ale’a Duenas, and Dominic Torres participated in the University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant’s Research Education and Extensive Fellowship (REEF) program in Dr. Peter Houk’s lab at the University of Guam Marine Laboratory. Through hands-on projects involving coral skeleton identification, benthic image analysis, and contributing to regional datasets, the interns worked with the Micronesia Coral Reef Monitoring (MCRM) program and learned how to use scientific data and technology to support the protection and monitoring of coral reef ecosystems.
The University of Guam’s (UOG) NSF EPSCoR E-RISE program has started this year’s Summer Math Research Experience (SMRE) and for the first time, welcomed participants from Guam Community College (GCC).
Members of the first Guam Green Growth (G3) Youth Conservation Corps and the 2026 cohort of the G3 Conservation Corps responded to post-typhoon recovery efforts, removing debris and clearing storm-damaged areas at the University of Guam (UOG) and partner sites after Super Typhoon Bavi passed through the Marianas.
From the lab to the hives and our ports of entry, the Guam Green Growth Conservation Corps has been hard at work learning what it takes to defend our island’s ecosystem from invasive species and biosecurity threats. 🌿🐝
The Guam Department of Agriculture Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) has extended the public comment period for the draft Guam Coastal Fisheries Management Plan (FMP) through July 21, 2026, providing additional time for fishers, community members, businesses, and stakeholders to review the draft plan and submit feedback.
